The event raises awareness of perinatal mood disorders (PMD's), which include postpartum depression (PPD). Depression among mothers (and fathers) in the months after delivery has surfaced as an important maternal and child health concern. Research shows that up to 20% of families struggle with postpartum depression and related disorders. PPD has been shown to affect marital relationships, mother and infant bonding, and infant behavior.
NEED NEW PARENTING STRATEGIES? As mother of a 7 and almost 9-year- old, I continually need tools/feedback on ways to manage the many challenges that present themselves - sibling rivalry, homework battles, friend issues, etc. I'm fortunate to know another great resource in our community, Lavonne Zwart Schaafsma, a licensed psychologist, who has the knowledge to help families through the many ups and downs. What I love about Lavonne is her approach. She's a mom of 3 and admits that she is challenged daily and struggles like every other parent.
I took her 7-week class with my husband and we gained so much from Lavonne and the other parents who attended. The principles discussed are based on the book "Positive Discipline" by Jane Nelsen Ed.D. The next class will be Tuesday evenings starting April 13 - May 25. The cost is $150 per person, $200 per couple (book included). Location: Women's Health Center in Grand Rapids. Call 616-458-4444 ext. 10 to register. I encourage you to attend the FREE informational seminar on Tuesday, April 6 @ 6:30 p.m. to learn more.OTHER GREAT OPPORTUNITIES:
